If you caught Duncan’s recent vet adventure, you already know the story: one tiny Yorkie, one not-so-tiny meltdown. That day reminded me of something bigger, though—just how much we depend on a handful of little essentials to get through the chaos of dog-mom life.
Duncan may be pint-sized, but he’s got a big personality. The car? Not his thing. The vet? Definitely not his thing. At home, though, he’s the chill one. His brother, Charlie, is the complete opposite—skittish, bouncy, and full of nervous energy. They couldn’t be more different. Funny enough, when we’re out and about, they flip: Charlie settles down, while Duncan… well, let’s just say the whole waiting room knows when he’s arrived.
One thing they do agree on? The Amazon truck. Every time a package comes through the front door, they’re convinced it’s all for them. (Well, not exactly—but don’t tell Duncan or Charlie that.)
That vet visit was the perfect reminder of how much I rely on a handful of everyday dog supplies to keep life with these two polar-opposite Yorkies manageable. And the best part? Almost all of them come straight from Amazon—delivered faster than Duncan can finish barking at the UPS guy.

Toys for the Chewers
These boys may be small, but don’t underestimate them—they’ve got jaws like bulldogs. To save my furniture (and fingers), we keep a steady rotation of:
- KONG toys – perfect for stuffing and freezing with healthy fillings.
- Benebones – durable enough for Duncan’s marathon chewing sessions.
- Bark toys – quirky, fun, and tough enough to survive the chaos.
Treats & Feeding
Because of Duncan’s history with pancreatitis, we have to be careful about what he eats. His safe favorites are:
- Freeze-dried meat treats
- Meat + sweet potato combos
- Frozen filled KONGs – hands-down his favorite special occasion reward.
Charlie, on the other hand, is half Duncan’s size (just 5 lbs) and the opposite when it comes to food. He’s not very food-motivated, so we keep him on a high-calorie, high-protein, high-fat diet. For him, treats are less about excitement and more about sneaking in extra calories wherever we can.
We also keep calming treats on hand—for what it’s worth—because sometimes every little bit helps.
Beds & Blankets
Both boys are blanket hoarders and will happily burrow for hours. Duncan recently ditched his old spot on our bed and started sleeping on the floor, so I caved and bought him a “big boy bed” because dogs are people too and shouldn’t sleep on the floor—an orthopedic mattress piled high with fluffy blankets, just for him. Charlie thinks it’s a trampoline, of course, but Duncan seems content to share (most of the time).
Cleaning Essentials
Accidents happen—especially with small dogs—so we keep Rocco & Roxie floor cleaner stocked at all times. It’s safe, effective, and a staple in our dog-mom toolkit.
Car Ride Setup
Travel is where their differences really shine. To keep everyone safe (and a little calmer), we use:
- Elevated car seats with double buckles – they love being able to see out the window.

- Mini harness for Charlie – since he’s too tiny for the JoyRide’s smallest size.
The Go Bag
