You Go, Little Guy

When Self-Doubt Meets Unexpected Inspiration

Back of a small Honda Fit at a red light. The bumper sticker offers unexpected inspiration: “Go ahead and pass me. This is as good as it gets.” A moment of self-doubt turns into reflection.

I was out running errands the other day—one AirPod in, phone on speaker, half talking to my daughter and half spiraling through the mental chaos that is… me. The to‑do list was growing, the traffic wasn’t moving, and my brain was busy chewing on one very persistent thought: Was this self‑doubt or just part of the process?  Could these everyday thoughts actually lead to unexpected inspiration?

Does any of this even matter?

Spiraling Through the What‑Ifs

I’d been tossing around blog ideas all week and was feeling that familiar weight of self‑doubt. You know the one: What am I doing? Does this make sense? Do I sound like a lunatic or a genius? Or just a deeply tired ER nurse with too many dogs and too many ideas?

Then I pulled up behind a Honda Fit at a red light. Not exactly a head‑turner. But the back of the car was plastered with bumper stickers—most of them faded or chaotic. Only one stood out clear as day:

“Go ahead and pass me. This is as good as it gets.”

A Sticker That Stopped Me in My Tracks

I read it. I blinked. And then—without missing a beat—I laughed. A real laugh. The kind that surprises you in the middle of a chaotic Tuesday afternoon.

Without even thinking, I found myself saying out loud, “Aww, you go, little guy. You’re doing great.”

And then—because the universe has a sense of humor—the driver turned his head just slightly. Not a grandma. Not a student. Not the small, quiet type you’d imagine driving a Honda Fit with that sticker. Nope. It was a burly man with a full Paul Bunyan beard and forearms the size of my steering wheel. Just… chillin’ in his little car. Living his best life.

Somehow, that made it all hit a little deeper.

More Than Just a Joke

That little sticker wasn’t self‑deprecating. It was self‑assured. It wasn’t saying, “This is all I’ll ever be.” It was saying, “I’m not trying to race you. I’m not trying to impress you. I’m good right here.”

In that moment, I realized something: he was showing up exactly as he was. No upgrades needed. And maybe… so was I.

Just ten seconds earlier, I had been mid‑spiral, second‑guessing whether I had anything worth sharing. Wondering if my everyday moments could mean anything to anyone but me. But that bumper sticker? That beard? That little Honda Fit at a red light?

They reminded me: sometimes the most unexpected messengers bring the biggest clarity.

Learning to Be Okay Right Where You Are

  • You don’t have to be shiny, perfect, or polished to make an impact.
  • Flashy or fast? Not required to move someone.
  • Sometimes, it’s the big‑bearded man in a tiny car, just minding his business… and still leaving someone better than he found them.

Wisdom in the Slow Lane

So here’s to the unexpected teachers.

To the ones with bumper sticker wisdom.

To the women driving through self‑doubt and still showing up anyway.

To the moments we almost miss… until they stop us at a red light and whisper, “You’re doing just fine.”

Maybe this is as good as it gets. And when we recognize that, even in the middle of self‑doubt and unexpected inspiration… maybe that’s not settling. Maybe that’s peace.

Note to Self:

If you’re feeling like a Honda Fit in a world full of Teslas… keep going. You’re doing great.
